Rooftop Sedums

rooftop sedumsRoof Top Sedums was started in 2007 by Landscape Architect Teresa Nelson and Horticulturist Roxanne Nagel.  The two sisters, both graduates of Iowa State University, began the company after being approached by Dave MacKenzie, owner of Hortech, Inc. based in Nunica, Michigan.  During the fall of 2006, he was gathering growers from across the nation to begin marketing a new modular green roof system that was in the process of being patented, soon to be known as the LiveRoof® Prevegetated Invisible Modular Green Roof System.

Roof Top Sedums, LLC became a Licensed Grower for the LiveRoof® system, and since the company’s inception in March of 2007, Roof Top Sedums has grown LiveRoof® modules for projects in their region which includes Iowa, western Missouri, eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska, and parts of western Illinois.  Roof Top Sedums also provides plant material for green roofs, including over 60 varieties of sedum, allium, and sempervivum, in the form of un-rooted cuttings, plugs, and divisions.

Completed projects by Roof Top Sedums during 2007 include the Dubuque Federal Building in Dubuque, Iowa; Willowwind School in Iowa City, Iowa; Vander Veer Botanical Park in Davenport, Iowa; and the Wright Brothers’ Historic Mule Barn in Columbia, Missouri.  Projects completed in 2008 include the UNI McCleod Plaza at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa; and the Blackburn Residence in Omaha, Nebraska.  During 2009, Roof Top Sedums completed projects that include the City Garden in St. Louis, Missouri; St. Clare Health Center in Fenton, Missouri; St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois; Springfield Dominican Convent in Springfield, Illinois; Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana; Water Tower Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Lenexa Fire Station #5 in Lenexa, Kansas.  Upcoming projects due to be installed during the Spring of 2010 will be located in Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Springfield, Illinois.

Roof Top Sedums, LLC is owned by Teresa Nelson, ASLA, LEED AP, Registered Landscape Architect (MI), B.L.A. Landscape Architecture (’87), Iowa State University, and Roxanne Nagel, Horticulturist, B.S. Horticulture (’99), Iowa State University.  In 2008, Tim Stephens joined the company as Production Manager, with his experience and B.S. in Horticulture (’98) from Iowa State University.  Combined together, the Roof Top Sedums staff has over 30 years of knowledge and experience in the landscape design and horticulture industry.

In addition to growing projects for LiveRoof®, Roof Top Sedums also conducts regional LiveRoof® Installer Certification classes and educational presentations focusing on green roof technology.
