Do you ever thing about the resources, besides the water itself, each time we turn on the faucet? Unfortunately, we can’t just drink the water as nature provides it. It has to be cleaned first. That process starts at a water treatment plant, where high-powered pumps bring the water from its source and move it through a very complicated plant. These pumps and processes use a lot of electricity. In fact, 4% of all the electricity generated in the entire country is used just to bring us water. Even more energy is used to manufacture and transport all the chemicals needed for water treatment. These chemicals take little particles of the water, kill algae and bacteria, keep bubbles from forming, help prevent tooth decay, and keep the water from destroying our pipes and water towers. Once the water is processed, the ready-to-drink water is pumped through distribution pipes all over the city and up into a big water tower, where it’s stored until we need it. That’s just half the story. What happens to the water after it goes down the drain? It has to be cleaned again before it goes back to nature. That process starts at a wastewater treatment plant where more pumps use more electricity to move the wastewater into a holding pond. Heavy solids settle to the bottom and lighter particles like oil and grease float to the surface. The heavy and light stuff is removed. Some is held in an energy-consuming warming tank called a digester where good bacteria eat all the harmful stuff. Then …

The DNR’s mobile Education Trailer travels the state for most of the year to schools, local community events, county fairs and is always at the State Fair. The Education Trailer is all about telling your Eco-Story, how what you do at home, work and school affects the environment. It focuses on different rooms and the things you can do in those rooms to make Iowa a better place. To reserve the Education Trailer, visit www.iowadnr.gov Kitchen: We use a lot of water and electricity in the kitchen. Energy Star appliances save a lot of both. Remember not to buy things that are over packaged like individually packaged servings like juice boxes. You can also grow your own fresh foods or buy locally, like at the local farmer’s market. Den: Recycling reduces our need for landfills, saves energy and decreases the amount of pollutants that negatively impact our climate. There are easy ways to conserve energy in your house like using a programmable thermostat or using a ceiling fan along with your air conditioning. Another energy conservation idea is to change your light bulbs to CFL or LED bulbs. Family Room: Did you know that electronics make up about 20% of our energy bill? Most of that is phantom energy or the power used when the electronics are turned off. We can reduce phantom energy by unplugging electronics or by using a power strip that you turn off when you’re not using them. Bathroom & Laundry: The biggest environmental issue here is water usage. To reduce consumption in …

On Labor Day, The Beach Boys will close out their Endless Summer Tour onstage in the tiny community of Fairfield, Iowa, in what’s being dubbed as one of the nation’s first “green” rock concerts. Iconic worldwide, The Beach Boys began singing about their California experience in 1961.What followed was a wave of hits that expressed lives, dreams and ambitions for generations of Americans. Their sound–an ocean’s swell of universally-loved songs about the beach, surfing, hot rods and sun-kissed romance–has brought the world optimism and a taste of California wherever the band’s music has been played. The show will feature demonstrations of clean energy projects and sustainable practices, as well as educational booths to teach simple ways at becoming more energy independent. Bio-diesel generators will be provided by the Quad-Cities’ own Rexroat Sound, and Malloy is currently in discussions with Alliant Enegy to turn the entire event into a “green-powered concert.”
